Abstract:
This article views the practices of meaning-seeking (Meaningful Work) and meaning-giving (Corporate Purpose) in knowledge work as phenomena of the crisis constellation of the Anthropocene. Informed by Hannah Arendt‹s analysis in ›Vita Activa‹ how certain forms of activity open certain forms of access to the world (while always closing off others), the observable purpose practices can be then differentiated into meaning production, meaning consumption and meaning colonisation. The aim is to integrate Arendt‹s categories into Susan Wolf’s model of meaningfulness, to build a bridge between debates on ›Meaningful Work‹ and ›Demands of the Anthropocene‹ and to come to the conclusion that the present crises in the world of work cannot be overcome in the same logic that caused them in the first place.
