Kapitalismus oder Solidaritaet? About the Relevance of the Foundations of the Social Market Economy in View of the Current Cri-tique of the Principles of a Market Economy)

Abstract: Angesichts der durch die Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise ausgeloesten Kritik marktwirt-schaftlicher Funktionsprinzipien versucht der Beitrag, die Grundlagen der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft wirtschaftsethisch zu untermauern. Die Reflexion auf die Bedingung der Moeglichkeit oekonomischer Tauschakte zeigt, dass das soziale Element der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft nicht lediglich als Ergaenzung einer vorgaengigen ‚natuerli-chen‘ Marktordnung anzusehen ist. Vielmehr fuehrt diese Reflexion zum Nachweis der intersubjektiven Genese individueller Freiheit. Auf Grundlage dieses Nachweises zeigt sich die konstitutive wechselseitige Bezogenheit von Marktwirtschaft und Sozia-litaet. Mit dieser kategorialen Rechtfertigung der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft koennen auch die aktuellen Forderungen nach einer grundsaetzlichen Reform marktwirtschaft-licher Systeme als unbegruendet zurueckgewiesen werden. (In view of the current critique of capitalism this paper tries to ground the concept of the Social Market Economy in the philosophy of ethics and economics. The reflection on the conditi-ons of the possibility of economic exchange shows that the social element in the Social Market Economy is not an arbitrary modification of the “natural” market order. Instead the paper gives evidence that individual freedom for more than one person cannot be conceived of without acknowledging the intersubjective genesis of individual freedom. This intersubjective genesis bounds the economic and the social perspective inextricably together. By illuminating this interconnectedness the paper finally rejects the current calls for a fundamental reform of the market economy as unjustified.)
