When and Why Did China “Disappear†from Bulgarian Economic Education?

Abstract: The paper traces the appearance and disappearance of China from political economy textbooks in Bulgaria in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the first textbooks published after the Bulgarian Liberation (1879), the authors use China, its history and culture as an illustration of important economic principles and trends. On the other hand, in the textbooks published in the 1920s, China “disappears†. This is due to the reduced weight of China in the world economy, as well as the fragmentation of the country during these years.
