The University and Its Communities

David Watson

Higher Education Management and Policy, 2007, vol. 19, issue 2, 1-9

Abstract: This article analyses the engagement of universities with the community in three domains: the consequences of the university simply “being there”, contractual and other partnerships, and the relationship between the institution and its members. The consequences are then explored for the values espoused and practiced by the universities, including the possibility of their codification into a set of “ten commandments”.
