Producer Response to Technological Change in West Pakistan

Daniel W. Sturt

American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 1965, vol. 47, issue 3, 625-633

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent and types of changes in farm practices that were taking place on farms in northern West Pakistan and to determine the motivation for making these changes. Further, information was sought pertaining to the aspirations of cultivators to make changes and what they considered the limiting factors. Two hundred cultivators from four villages were interviewed, the sample having been stratified in recognition of cultural and other differences. One-third of the cultivators made changes of some kind in 1962. The greatest number of changes occurred where cultivators were more able to bear the risks involved. The major motivation appeared to be the desire for more food for family consumption, although the desire to make certain types of production investments was also evident. Although there were apparent barriers to change, the cultivators were, for the most part, optimistic that they would make certain changes in the future.
