Alternative Measures of Aggregate Inputs and Productivity in Agriculture

Lawrence H. Shaw

American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 1967, vol. 49, issue 3, 670-683

Abstract: Certain inconsistencies exist in the current measurement of aggregate inputs and productivity in agriculture. These inconsistencies result from an implicit neglect of composition, a phenomenon of aggregate production. An alternative way of measuring the components of aggregate production, which considers composition as a separate component, is proposed. This alternative affords consistent treatment of both measures of aggregate inputs and productivity and places focus on changes in the structure of production as a source of growth.
