Changes in Number and Size Distribution of U. S. Soybean Processing Firms

Paul L. Farris

American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 1973, vol. 55, issue 3, 495-499

Abstract: Rapid growth in soybean processing was accompanied by declining processor numbers between 1946 and 1971. Large firm concentration rose through 1965, then stabilized. Processor size distributions after 1953 tended toward lognormality. Future industry structure may be significantly influenced by public policies affecting competitive viability of intermediate size firms.
