On Sustainability and the Economics of Survival

Abstract: This paper investigates the implications of sustainability and survival strategies for economic analysis. It reviews connections between the approaches used by economists and biological scientists in the study of survival. The paper emphasizes the role of irreversibility and uncertainty in the investigation of sustainability issues. Implications of the results for the analysis of economic behavior are discussed.
