Where Do We Go from Here? 1. Technical Change and Dynamics

Cambridge Journal of Economics, 1988, vol. 12, issue 1, 169-77
Abstract:
One of the most striking features of Piero Sraffa's Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities is that although it pointed the way towards a reassessment of the theoretical system of classical economics, its own analytical formulation was limited in a number of areas which were of great concern to the classical economists. This paper deals with two of these areas: (1) the analysis of technology and technological change in a production system; and (2) the analysis of structural dynamics in economic systems. In both of these areas, theoretical developments have taken place since the publication of Sraffa's book. In relation to both of these areas, the role which competitive processes play in classical economic analysis is also discussed. Copyright 1988 by Oxford University Press.
