Privatisation in the Russian Federation: Changing Enterprise Behaviour in the Transition Period

Timothy N Ash and Paul Hare ()

Cambridge Journal of Economics, 1994, vol. 18, issue 6, 619-34

Abstract: This paper outlines the legislative background to privatization in Russia and reviews the new administrative structures set up to implement it. The available methods of privatization are also discussed. A survey of a small number of firms in Moscow and in Nizhnii-Novgorod and Volgograd Oblasts showed that firms mostly privatized in response to official pressure to do so and that little had changed in the firm postprivatization. In the long run, however, it is clear that most firms will have to change their behavior if Russia's privatization is to be a success. (c) 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
