Ricardo, Torrens, and Sraffa: A Summing Up

Giancarlo de Vivo

Cambridge Journal of Economics, 1996, vol. 20, issue 3, 387-91

Abstract: This paper discusses the existence of a corn-ratio theory of profits in Robert Torrens's works, the Ricardian origin of which is avowed by Torrens himself. This constitutes significant evidence in favor of Piero Sraffa's reading of Ricardo's early theory of profits. Samuel Hollander's (1995) 'rebuttal' of this evidence is also discussed and found to be based on a seriously flawed reading of the relevant texts.
