Modelling Agriculture to Support Regional Water Management

European Review of Agricultural Economics, 1990, vol. 17, issue 3, 317-34
Abstract:
Users of groundwater and surface water in a region often have conflicting requirements concerning availability and quality of this water. To support regional water management, a decision support system has been formulated. Modeling agriculture within this system involves a qualitative description of processes at farm level, while also taking into account hydrological conditions. An aggregated and simplified version of this model (OPTAG) is used to identify, by optimization, possible future states of the region. The usability of the optimization model is demonstrated by results from a test region where agriculture, environment, and public water supply are the relevant users.
