Assessing the Future Importance of Industrial Markets for Agricultural Products
Caroline A Spelman
European Review of Agricultural Economics, 1991, vol. 18, issue 3-4, 365-80
Abstract:
This paper assesses the future importance of nonfood uses of agricultural raw materials made possible by new technologies and biotechnology in particular. The two main outlets are for carbohydrate use in the chemical and energy sector, but other opportunities also exist for oils, fats, and fibres. The paper examines the technical, economic, and political constraints on more widespread use of these raw materials and concludes that, together with the underlying economic trend of the relative cheapening of agricultural raw materials, concern about the environment may well prove the catalyst for wider usage.
