The role of economic analysis in planning the allocation of land between agricultural and urban uses

Aage Walter-Jørgensen

European Review of Agricultural Economics, 1978, vol. 5, issue 3-4, 299-311

Abstract: Land use planning in urbanizing rural areas means taking into consideration the different objectives of society. It requires a balancing of the conflicting goals to preserve the country's resources of land and amenities of nature, to protect agriculture and to provide the urban population with good housing conditions, a healthy environment and job opportunities. After a survey of the developments in the use of the land, in the prices of agricultural and urban land and of the institutional arrangements concerning land use planning in various countries, the economic implications of the competition for the land between agricultural and urban use are discussed. Special attention has been given to the protection of the environment.
