Abstract:
Summary Technical developments in crop production and animal husbandary have long been a subject of agro-economic research. In order to determine the theoretical maximum of world food production, a group of Dutch plant scientists has established theoretical maxima for various agro-climatic zones (see Buringh et al., i.p.). This paper relates these maximum yields to thehistorical development of grain, rice, and total agricultural production in various countries in order to rank the examined areas according to their remaining potential for increased production. For this purpose, various prognostic functions have been taken into consideration with regard to their suitability for projecting longer-term development trends.
