Abstract:
ObjectivesThis study aims to examine the living arrangement preferences of older adults in Shanghai, China, with a focus on grandparenting as a shaping factor.MethodsThis study utilizes data from the 2022 Lifelong Education for Aging Productively in Shanghai survey, which included 1,707 older adults aged 55–85. Since this study focuses on grandparenting, respondents without grandchildren were excluded, resulting in an analytical sample of 1,250 individuals. In this study, grandparenting is measured through grandparenting beliefs, frequency of grandchild care, and previous grandparenting experiences.ResultsThe results indicate a decisive shift toward independent living, with 90% preferring to live alone or with a spouse. However, preferences adapt when adult children require support, including grandparenting. Our analysis shows that grandparenting beliefs, experiences, and intensity are positively associated with the preference for coresidence.DiscussionThese findings highlight the lleability of living arrangement preferences and suggest a persistent, though evolving, form of intergenerational solidarity. This study contributes to the literature by emphasizing the importance of adult children’s needs in shaping parents’ living arrangement preferences in contemporary urban China.
