Abstract: This article makes an attempt to assess the significance of economic integration among African countries, taking the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) of 1989 as a case study, judged from the perspective of one member country--Algeria. The main conclusion to emerge from the empirical findings is that, while the existence of trade expansion effects can be demonstrated, their impact on the Algerian economy is quite modest.
