Abstract:
The research output of economics departments in U.K. universities is assessed using data envelopment analysis. Results are compared with those obtained in the recent Universities Funding Council exercise. The results obtained are sensitive to the inclusion or otherwise of external funding as an input into the research process. A new method for assessing the relative performance of a number of data envelopment analyses is proposed. Copyright 1993 by Royal Economic Society.
