Can SMEs Promote Sustainable Development?

Abstract: The main aims of this paper were to evaluate, debate and disseminate SMEs initiatives in the area of sustainable development, to identify further dissemination strategies and options for SMEs and to identify information needs of SMEs. Small and medium-sized enterprises cover 99.8% of all businesses and account for around two-thirds of employment in the EU. It is now generally accepted that these enterprises are key to growth and employment generation. Well-managed SMEs are a source of employment opportunities and wealth creation. They can contribute to social stability and generate tax revenues. SMEs can constitute an important source of local supply and service provision to larger corporations. They usually have extensive local knowledge of resources, supply patterns and purchasing trends. Sustainable Development pursues and tries to find a stable theoretical framework for making decisions in any situation where such a report can be found man-environment, be it environmental, economic or social.
