Abstract: The Romanian banking system has made a significant progress over the transition to a market economy. This can be explained by the fact that the Romanian banks embraced banking strategies which had as purpose a performance improvement. In spite of this fact, they still have to cross a long way in order to catch up with the EU banking in terms of development and performance. This paper consists of a synthetic presentation of the main stages of evolution in the Romanian banking system from 1990 until now.
