Abstract: The Romanian insurance market had and continues to have a similar evolution to the Romanian economy, being heavily influenced by changes in the environment. Nowadays, the insurance market is affected by the crisis. The evolution of the insurance market recorded an ascending trend till 2008, but in 2009 it recorded a decrease which continued in 2010. Causes of the decreases are related to the economic crisis, the significant contraction of sales of vehicles, of motor leasing, of the freezing of bank loans and due to the decrease in the purchasing power, but causes are related also to consumer behaviour. In this paper a documentary study regarding the main characteristics of the Romanian insurance market in the crisis period and the results of a survey regarding the perception on insurance are presented.
