Abstract: The experience accumulated worldwide and also the recent researches funded by the European Commission highlights the important role that small and medium enterprises occupy within the market economy and within providing alternative employment of human resources. This article aims to show the characteristics of SMEs, which are their criterial bounds, as well as what is their place and importance in the Romanian economy.
