Abstract: Since banking sectors from Central and East-European countries are currently characterized by high levels of presence of foreign banks, in this article we intended to conduct a costs and benefits analysis on their entry in the banking markets of these countries. The study will begin with a comparative analysis on bank privatization policies used in 5 Central and Southeastern Europe countries (Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria), because they had a great influence in increasing domination of banks with foreign capital. We will also compare the characteristics and structure of the banking sector in each of the five countries and we’ll show that in recent years, in every country, there is a growing governance of foreign-owned banks.
