The Relationship Between Employment and Economic Development in Romania: A County Level Analysis

Abstract: In this paper, we aim to highlight the peculiarities of the Romanian counties from the point of view of employment. Moreover, we intend to analyse the relationship between employment (under the aspect of structure and efficiency) and economic development in order to show that disparities at the counties’ level of development can be explained by disparities in employment. The results of the study highlight the necessity for change in structure and quality of employment (especially in the counties from the North-East, South-East, South Muntenia and South-West Oltenia regions), in order to assure the conditions for a balanced regional development.
