Moldova in the Eastern Partnership: Free Trade Attempts, Asymmetric Benefits

Abstract: The European Neighbourhood Policy was launched in 2004 with the purpose of promoting security, democracy and shared prosperity at a regional scale, between the EU members and both Mediterranean and Eastern Balkans countries. Shifting to a more practical approach through the Eastern Partnership, the EU has implemented specific procedures to help the poorest of its neighbours (Moldova, Georgia and Armenia) to overcome the gap of structural power and become more competitive on the regional market. In this frame, Moldova was among the most obedient of the EU students, scrupulously doing her homework in liberalising trade and applying institutional reforms. Notwithstanding, the EU has not answered equivalently to Moldova’s efforts of opening its borders, as the gained benefits did not materialize into expected membership perspectives
