Abstract: Education has been the object of appreciation and research since ancient times, statesmen, great scholars, philosophers, men of culture and art, school people carefully investigating this area with profound implications for the development of present and future society. Regarded as a cultural, social or civilization factor, the importance of education is widely recognized in the intellectual and moral training and development of people and society, in general. Education begins in childhood and, in terms of contemporary society, it becomes a permanent activity. Given the importance of this area, in this paper I have proposed an analysis of the situation of the education in Romania during 1990-2011, using representative indicators such as: the number of educational institutions, the school population, the number of pupils, the number of students, the number of teaching staff and the birth rate. For this study, I have used the principal component analysis method and, for the statistical data processing, I have used the SPSS software
