Abstract: The aim of this research is to assess Romania’s competitiveness, by analyzing the aggregated Global Competitiveness Index and correlate it with the innovation factor, and particularly with the eco-innovation factor. As it is included in the efficiencydriven stage, Romania needs to implement some regulatory measures addressing the 12th Pillar of Innovation, in order to boost its overall competitiveness and achieve sustainable development. Tackling the ecoinnovation local needs by focusing on SME’s can be an option, as their creativity is enhanced by the lack of extensive internal rules and regulations and their response time is lower, due to a centralized decision making process
