Abstract: Higher education in Romania is going through a period of intensive changes based on development strategies established with the integration into the European Union. Because of the economic situation that Romania now has and the current economic crisis, the Government funds and universities own funds are virtually nonexistent. The big challenge for the higher education institutions is to align themselves to the requests of European Union through reaching the objectives that were established nationally in the development strategies based on the Bologna Process, the Lisbon Treaty and EUROPA 2020. The major problem is to finance the actions and the activities needed for reaching the objectives at the national level due to the economic crisis that affects the majority of countries.
