Abstract: The paper reviews the main elements of the EU cohesion policy, which is the basis of territorial economic development of the Member States. Reference elements of Cohesion Policy in the current programming period (2007-2013) are presented, and the main aspects of the reform anticipated to be implemented in the future programming period (2014-2020), including key challenges that Romania will have to face.
