Abstract: The paper analyses the specialty literature on absenteeism expressed by citizens in elections. There are analyzed factors leading to absenteeism according to the literature and there are given examples of authors’ own analyzes or of other authors regarding the applicability of these factors which influence the turnout in Romania, France, and USA. There are analyzed as motivations of the presence/absence of the elector from voting: the social position of the elector, the economic models of utility, the type of voting and the institution for which the elections are organized.
