Abstract:
Paolo Sylos Labini spent almost three years (1956-1958) as charged professor of Economics at the University of Sassari. The publication of the first edition of his masterpiece Oligopoly and Technical Progress dates back to that period (1956). The background of Sylos Labini’s stay in Sassari was characterised by the widespread inclination of university teachers to ‘commute’. This was a quite common habit in Sardinian universities, so that they were considered as a sort of ‘passage universities’. However, it would be an error to underrate the strong relationships that Sylos Labini had along his life with some people he met in Sassari, such as colleagues, students and many others. This paper, through the analysis of unpublished sources, contributes to the reconstruction of the early stages of Sylos Labini’s academic career.
