Abstract: Motivation: The free movement of employees, especially of working age, is manifested by migration related mainly to the impact on professional careers. Leaving a given area by highly qualified staff is called brain drain. Observed in Poland, it weakens the economy and raises growing concern due to the outflow of young, qualified people. Aim: The aim of the article is to define the scale of the brain drain phenomenon taking into account its causes based on selected definitions. Materials and methods: Critical analysis of secondary sources as well as subject literature was used. Empirical material is the data of the Statistic Poland and the Public Opinion Research Center. Results: Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the problem of brain drain is still current in the economy, and may increase over time. Its intensity is mainly observed in the east and south of the European Union (EU), where countries have the least ability to retain talent. In Poland, the highest mobility of qualified staff was observed in the EU.
