Abstract: The theme of orientating the process organization of the mining industry towards an as complete as possible optimization by means of investigating the efficiency of its combination of factors is one of capital importance for the theory, the praxis and the future of the mining economics. The present paper tries first of all to clarify the list and the content of the production factors involved in the mining processes; it attempts then to name the most important possible criteria for estimating to which extent a combination of factors is actually optimal; finally, it makes a series of basic statements on the history and evolution of the combinations of factors in the mining industry on its way towards optimality.
