Moneta e Credito, 2018, vol. 71, issue 281, 67-91

Abstract: This paper aims to provide an analysis of Italian students performance in language and mathematical tests in relation to the public or private nature of the school they attend, using the dataset of the Invalsi national surveys. First the characteristics of pupils attending public schools in comparison of those of pupils attending private schools are examined. Secondly a series of multilevel analysis have been carried out on the same data. The results show that controlling for pupils characteristics such as social background and level of competence in entrance there is no appreciable difference in standardized tests performance between public and private schools in primary and lower secondary education. Instead in upper secondary education, public schools perform better than private ones.
