SMV School: A Relook at Recruitment and Retention Strategies

Abstract: Cases in educational institutions, especially in schools, are relatively scarce. This case is about SMV School and is unique in the sense that it discusses the administration from a management perspective. The school needs help managing its most important resource: teachers. SMV pays handsomely to its teachers but still experiences high teacher turnover. Administrative practices and regulations of the school had been adapted from the diamond business of the founder of the school. The work environment is rigid, with strict rules and regulations for everyone. SMV has been unable to elevate its students’ academic performance to the next intended level, and performance has been stagnant in the last few years. Dhanani, the administrative director of the school, is worried about how to make the school a better place to work and improve the performance of its students, teachers and staff.
