Introducing Technological Change: A Case Study

Abstract: The introduction of electronic news gathering equipment in the ABC illustrates the barriers to consensus-based consultation when the associated demarcation dispute reflects management's pursuit of its “territorial†interests, as well as the different but interacting apprehensions of various workgroups; and when those workgroups are all covered by the same “house union†. If the ABC is to accommodate such technological change, it would seem desirable for it to develop more flexible organisational and job structures. It would also seem necessary for it to improve its decision-making and consultative mechanisms.
