Abstract: The article presents the concept of Big Data and its potential for smart grids. Due to the changes on the energy market, electric power companies must change their business models, shift towards a client-centric approach and start to be more proactive in the decision-making process. It requires handling more and more data from different sources. Besides some background information on business analytics areas in smart grids, the paper presents a short comparison of the leading technology vendors offering business analytics solutions based on the GTM and Gartner reports. The paper concludes with general suggestions how business analytics can be applied in utilities and further research.
