Abstract:
Purpose: The primary purpose of this paper is to present information and communication technologies, collectively referred to as ICT, as a determinant of the development and functioning of the modern world through the prism of tools, models, concepts and platforms that enable their application. This is accomplished in the article by presenting selected technologies along with illustrating the scope and possibilities of their use. Methodology: The scope of the research included ICT technologies, their development and evolution, as well as their application in various fields. Extensive source material was collected, with a primary focus on academic publications, including books and articles. Additionally, a review of relevant websites was conducted to complement the research. The selected materials were in both Polish and English. These sources were then screened for substantive content, which led to the rejection of several items. The next steps involved the analysis and synthesis of the selected content. The result is a presentation of the characteristics of ICT technologies in terms of their origin, development, and current state, along with a selection of specific examples. The choice of bibliography was influenced by the limitations described below. Findings: The article presents ICT technologies in the context of their origin, development, and potential applications. It also discusses specific ICT technologies, including tools, models, concepts, and platforms. The possibilities and scope of their use in the realities of the modern world are illustrated through concrete examples. Summary conclusions were also included. In doing so, the main objective of this study has been realized. Research limitation: Due to the rather rich literature on the subject addressed in this study, the author’s subjective selection of topics, examples and sources constitutes a limitation of the research. Additionally, many materials present the analyzed issues from various, often narrow or specific perspectives (e.g. social or economic), which makes it difficult – or even impossible – to conduct a comparative analysis and formulate comprehensive conclusions. Another limitation is the lack of systematically repeated studies within a comparable scope, which prevents the analysis of the phenomenon’s variability over time. Practical implication: The article provides a comprehensive overview of ICT technologies, including their origin, development, and current state. It also presents practical examples of the application of selected technologies in the context of today’s digital world. Moreover, the key challenges facing ICT technologies are identified. The presented content is concluded with a set of concise, synthesized findings. Originality/Value: The literature on the subject, although undoubtedly extensive, is often selective in nature and usually presents the topic in a limited scope (e.g. a specific country or region). Studies often address the issue from a narrow, specialized perspective (e.g. education, psychology). For this reason, this study approaches the topic in a more comprehensive manner Zacharacterizing the issue from a broader perspective than just an industry-specific one. This allows for a more comprehensive view of the issues discussed.
