Abstract:
Abstract This study aims to analyze the determinants of processes of knowledge creation and knowledge spillovers that affect the volume of innovative goods and services. It investigates the role of spatial and non-spatial proximities in knowledge creation in Russian regions within a spatial econometric modeling framework. This study also estimates the effect of expenditure on technological innovations and human capital on the knowledge production function in the spatial autoregressive model, the spatial Durbin model, and the extended spatial error model. The results indicate that, whereas cognitive proximity enhanced knowledge spillovers in 2005 and had a positive impact on the volume of innovative goods and services, technological proximity had no effect on knowledge creation. Spatial proximity existed between Russian regions but was not based on either R&D or human capital. The results of the study can be used for developing policies oriented towards integration projects and joint regional programs of the Russian Federation.
