Abstract:
Abstract The problem of formulating the design of laminated composite plates as a global optimization problem is discussed. In the paper, a general procedure, based upon the polar formalism for the use of tensor invariants as design variables is presented, along with a wide discussion of its peculiarities and of some numerical issues. An outlook about some open problems is also given, with a perspective on possible future issues and further developments.
