Abstract:
This paper focuses on selection of third-party logistics providers supplying the firm with contract logistics services. Decisions on the selection of third-party logistics providers are strategic decisions which have to be long-term orientated considering mutual commitments between the partners involved, fixed costs upon selection of a new provider in the form of investment in training, and technology, as well as significant costs of switching from one provider to another. Existing approaches supporting supplier selection neglect these investment costs of selecting suppliers and costs of switching from one supplier to another. These shortcomings of current approaches motivate the research presented in this paper. A stochastic dynamic model for supplier selection will be proposed. On the strategic level we model alternative dynamic supplier selection strategies and the corresponding investment and switching costs. On a tactical level, we present a generic dynamic supplier selection model. On the basis of this model, the impacts of the supplier selection strategies on medium-term supply chain performance can be evaluated. Copyright Springer-Verlag 2006
