Abstract: Abstract We consider two-level regular fractional factorial split-plot (FFSP) designs with important whole plot (WP) factors. A new criterion, the general minimum lower-order confounding of type WP (WP-GMC), is proposed to rank such FFSP designs. Using a finite projective geometric formulation, which involves identifying alias sets using the points of the geometry, we take complementary sets as the main technical tool to derive explicit formulae connecting the leading terms for this criterion. These results are then applied to find optimal FFSP designs under the WP-GMC criterion. Some WP-GMC FFSP designs are tabulated.
