Abstract: Abstract We study the effect of weather shocks on the paddy and white rice markets in Colombia. We use data from municipal reports and price information systems about production and prices, climate data about precipitation from CHIRPS, and temperature from Copernicus. Our results show that the relation between the climate variables and production is heterogeneous according to the production system: Rainfed or Irrigation. We find that high and low-temperature shocks reduce rice production and affect prices substantially. Finally, we found evidence of a complete pass-through of paddy to white rice prices, but weather shocks affect the profit margins of rice mills.
