Abstract: Abstract The present article was written to contribute to the scientific discussion on the problems of food independence and food security which was opened on the pages of this journal at the invitation of the editorial board. For several decades, increasing self-sufficiency in food has been a goal of the Russian Federation‘s policy. The article discusses aspects of benefits and costs of attaining this goal from an economic, social and political point of view. Based on the results of the study, it is proposed to review the concept of food self-sufficiency.
