Action learning sets as microcosms of democracy: trust-building and democratic engagement in organisational contexts

Abstract:
This study explores the synergy between Action Learning (AL) and democratic practices within organisations, positioning Action Learning Sets (ALSs) as microcosms of representative democracy. It emphasises the pivotal role of trust-building – particularly swift trust in virtual settings – in fostering collaborative environments where democratic values such as inclusivity, mutual accountability, and shared leadership can thrive. Drawing on experiences from a research project with students, this paper illustrates how the iterative processes of reflection and action in ALSs facilitate the development of trust, critical thinking, and collective decision-making. The findings suggest that integrating AL into organisational practices not only enhances problem-solving capabilities but also promotes a culture of democratic engagement, leading to sustainable organisational transformation. Implications for practice and recommendations for further research on trust dynamics in ALSs are discussed.
