Effects of extreme temperature on childhood cognitive development: evidence from China

Abstract: Climate change has profound impacts on human health and socioeconomic outcomes. This paper studies the long-term effects of extreme temperature after birth on school-aged children’s cognitive development. The results show significant negative effects of low temperature after birth on children, especially for those born in southern China and unsupportive home environment. Nonlinear effects reveal differences across genders, and an exploration of mechanisms suggests that male neonates’ physiological disadvantages and male-biased allocations of resources combine to cause these results. The findings call for tailored interventions for children and more attention from policymakers, governments and caregivers to successfully implement these measures.
