The impact of a dairy intervention in rural India: evidence from realised outcomes and expected returns to investment

Journal of Development Effectiveness, 2009, vol. 1, issue 2, 147-170

Abstract: This study evaluates an intervention in the dairy subsector by an Indian livelihood promotion institution. Two contributions are being made. For one, the study is among the first to evaluate not only the credit-impact of an integrated microfinance approach but also the impact of additional financial and nonfinancial services on investment specific returns and general outcome indicators. Furthermore, an innovative contribution to the literature is made by estimating the subjective expected return to investment into a milk producing animal. Primary collected data allow analysing subjective expectations of the investment as perceived by the household that decided to join or not to join the intervention.
