Polish Post-Keynesianism: A Brief History

Jan Toporowski and Gracjan Robert Bachurewicz

Review of Political Economy, 2025, vol. 37, issue 4, 1404-1421

Abstract: Post-Keynesianism in Poland is represented largely by the work and ideas of Michał Kalecki, although Keynes’s General Theory and the writings of Joan Robinson were discussed in Poland shortly after the British publication. After the Second World War Polish discussion focused on Kalecki’s writings. In 1956, Keynes’s General Theory was published in Polish, followed by other writings of Robinson, John Hicks, Paul Samuelson and J.K. Galbraith. On the whole, however, there was little explicitly Post-Keynesian theoretical research until the 1980s, when Kalecki’s editor Jerzy Osiatyński reached Kalecki’s contribution to Post-Keynesian economics for the English edition of Kalecki’s Collected Works. Interest in Post-Keynesian monetary theory emerged in the 21st century. The paper concludes with a bibliography of Keynesian literature as it appeared in Poland, with the critical reception that it received.
