Abstract:
In the current cleaning policy where one hotel room is cleaned by one room attendant, hygiene problems may occur. To prevent this problem, an alternative is suggested that three different room attendants divide the cleaning area into bedroom, bathroom, and toilet. This cleaning policy could be the method to systematically prevent room attendants from using cleaning tools inappropriately. An efficient staff scheduling strategy is proposed based on a mathematical model to help hotels implement the alternative with minimal cost. The mathematical model reflects various characteristics of the hotel industry and ensures work equity and welfare considering the working environment of the hotel room attendants. The result of the numerical experiment shows that the new separated cleaning policy can be implemented with a slight increase in staffing. A practical solution is provided to prevent existing sanitary problems by effectively improving the hotel staff scheduling strategy.
