Recursive filtering of networked systems with communication protocol scheduling: a survey

Abstract: As a significant branch of modern automation and control theory, networked control systems has obtained a great success in remote monitoring, diagnostics, and management of control infrastructures owing to their obvious advantages in distributed architecture, real-time capability, reliability, security, scalability and interoperability. However, the limited networked resources usually lead to the occurrences of some network-induced phenomena, thus increasing the difficulties of the analysis and synthesis for the filtering/control problem. In this context, communication protocols have been introduced to schedule the signal transmission, thus properly allocating limited network resources. The main aim of this survey is to give a comprehensive review of networked systems, communication protocols and recursive filtering. First, we review some basic introductions to networked systems and some common network-induced phenomena. Then, we introduce the latest progress in designing communication strategies for various filtering problems of several networked systems. In addition, we outline several possible future research directions on communication protocols for filtering/control systems.
